About the Course
The NBE affiliated DrNB in Surgical Oncology programme trains the specialist surgeon in the treatment of solid tumours of the oroeosophagogastrointestinal tract, of parenchymal and endocrine organs and of skin, mesenchymal, neurogenic, bone and soft tissues. Training also includes prevention, genetic counseling, specific diagnostic and staging procedures, rehabilitation and follow-up care. Sri Shankara Cancer Hospital and Research Centre has a rigorous academic schedule that facilitates trainees to improve their clinical acumen, develop an understanding of standard protocols in oncology and train them to critically analyze the latest developments in clinical and translational research that can impact the treatment that they will provide to their patients.
Course Objectives
PROGRAMME GOAL
At the end of the course the candidate should have acquired knowledge, skills,
aptitude and attitude to be able to function as an independent clinician/
consultant and a teacher in Surgical Oncology.
PROGRAMME AIMS
The trainee will gain knowledge and skills during the training period that
he/she after qualification, independently or as a responsible surgical member of
an interdisciplinary oncology team and will be able to:
- Recognize symptoms and signs of cancer
- Make a diagnostic programme for suspected tumours or metastasis and perform
- Staging and classification of manifest tumours
- Perform prognostic assessment -4
- Define the role of surgery in a given classified disease reflecting the patients general condition, including or excluding multimodality approaches in a pretreatment discussion within a multidisciplinary team
- Perform an adequate preoperative work-up
- Perform cancer surgery within his/her specialty with high skill and quality
- Manage postoperative care
- Decide on and perform adequate follow-up
- Implement national guidelines into local practice
- Perform palliative surgical treatment, supportive and terminal care
- Diagnose, score and treat side-effects and complications of surgical treatment
- Assess the impact of surgical interventions on quality of life
- Communicate accurately and adequately to cancer patients and their relatives
- Manage common psychologic reactions to crisis and final stage of life
- Practice medicine in accordance with medical ethics and patients rights
More Information
The training programme will focus on improving (ASK) A - Aptitute, S - Skil, K - Knowledge in the field of surgical oncology. 8 sophisticated operation theatres, equipped with laparoscopic equipment, dedicated surgical wards and ICU and regular academic discussions will allow the holistic development of the trainee. For the compulsory thesis project, the trainee will be encouraged to undertake innovative projects in translational research under the guidance of experienced scientists. The trainee will also receive special training that makes it possible for them to understand the divergent fields of oncology such as Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology and appreciate their potential roles in treatment.
