About the Course

The Department Head and Neck Surgical Oncology at Sri Shankara Cancer Hospital is an academic, multidisciplinary centre dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and research of head and neck cancer with infrastructure to perform complex ablative and reconstructive surgery, including microvascular reconstruction, in all types of head and cancer. The fellowship program provides intensive hands-on surgical training in complex ablative head and neck oncologic surgery and minimally invasive techniques. The clinical rotation consists of a 18-month period, wherein fellows are responsible for preoperative and postoperative patient care, and are involved in surgical operations under the direction of the attending surgeons. Each fellow performs 250 to 300 procedures during the year of clinical rotation.

Course Objectives

Impart training in protocol based management of head and neck cancer in a multidisciplinary setting
Introduce the trainee to basic and advanced surgical concepts and techniques of surgical oncology pertaining to the head and neck region
Impart intensive training in reconstructive surgery towards the end of the fellowship with introduction to concepts of microvascular reconstruction.
Encourage participation in clinical, basic and translational research.

Clinical responsibilities

Assessment of new patients
Planning and delivery of treatment under different levels of supervision as appropriate
Follow up and assessment of outcome.
Organize and present cases in multidisciplinary meetings.
Discuss service development and clinical trials projects
Record data for the purposes of clinical audit and trials

Academic responsibilities

Collation and analysis of patient data for purposes of research and publication
Training junior doctors/ nursing/paramedical staff
Management of outreach and prevention clinics with collection and organization of data.

Expected Rotations/Work Schema:

1. Head and Neck surgery- 14.5 months
2. Radiation Oncology-3 weeks
3. Medical Oncology 1 week
4. Nuclear medicine - 15 days
5. Pathology - 15 days
6. Anaesthesia and ICU Management- 15 days
7. Laboratory/ Basic Sciences Rotation- 1 month


6 monthly and end of training evaluation based on log book records, self-assessment and a university exam at the end of 18 months

18 months. Affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS).

More Information

In addition to the routine clinical rotations and training, the fellow will be encouraged to participate in clinical and translational research. The fellow will present one journal article every week during their training. Both recent advances and landmark articles will be discussed in detail in order to improve understanding of head and neck cancer and research in general.
The fellow will be involved in the planning, surgery and post operative care and rehabilitation of Head and Neck Cancer Patients. The procedures include
